I received a phone call from a cousin the other day. He has been a dentist in Nashville, Tennessee for many years, but recently retired from that career to winter in a beachfront condo in Jupiter Beach, Florida. His days are spent laying on the beach and playing golf. In fact, it was his golf game that caused him to make contact with me.

United Producers offering scholarships

United Producers Inc. (UPI) is supporting the future generation through its scholarship program. UPI will offer up to 10 scholarships, each valued at $1,500, to deserving high school students pursuing higher education.

Republican Women scholarships available

The Highland County Republican Women’s Club is offering five scholarships of $500 each to assist any Highland County high school senior planning to further their education upon graduation. The scholarships are being awarded to honor the memory of two local well-known Republican women — Kay Ayres and Margaret Van Frank. Each are remembered for their contributions of service to the club and the Republican party.

Three complete FFA officer books

Three of the Hillsboro FFA officers — Breanna Cooper, Reagan Eastes and Kenzie Pointer — have completed their officer books and have submitted them to the Ohio FFA Association. These officers maintained record books throughout the year to document financial reports, agendas, minutes, meeting attendance, newspaper articles, correspondence and a collection of photographs from the year. Pointer said “It was something I had to prepare for and was happy to finally put it all together.’’ These officers will be recognized for their effort and success at the Ohio FFA State Convention in May. Cooper, chapter reporter; Eastes, chapter treasurer; and Pointer, chapter secretary, all received gold ratings on their officer books. Appeals court convening in Hillsboro

The Fourth District Court of Appeals will convene at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 23 at the Highland County Common Pleas Courtroom, Highland County Courthouse in Hillsboro, to consider appeals from Ross County.

McClain offers rated gold

McClain FFA would like to congratulate the chapter’s officers that turned in their books after learning that each received a gold rating. These officers are Kenedi Wise, secretary; Cade Sponcil, treasurer; and Brooke Baldwin, reporter. These officers have worked hard over the past several months to make sure these books are perfect. Each book has specific requirements to receive a gold rating that takes lots of time and effort. All three books were recently judged and received a gold rating. They will be recognized at the Ohio FFA State Convention in May.
