All cattle are not created equal, at least when it comes to the most effective teaching of agriculture students. As such, a dozen new bovine faces are enjoying the arrival of spring after spending their first winter at Wilmington College’s Academic Farm.

Hillsboro celebrates National FFA Week

The Hillsboro FFA celebrated National FFA Week by dressing up to show awareness through the school. The week began on Tuesday with the theme Pajama Day, Wednesday was Blue and Gold Day, Thursday was Dress up as Your Favorite FFA Teacher Day and Friday was Anything but a Backpack Day. The chapter served lunch to all Hillsboro High School teachers in celebration. Four Hillsboro FFA officers submitted radio shorts to Buckeye Country 105.5 sharing what they love most about FFA. WC gets $250K for dormitory upgrades

Wilmington College’s plans for installing individual heating/cooling units in two residence halls this summer received a financial jolt of adrenaline when it recently received a $250,000 state grant for energy efficiency retrofits and upgrades.

Hillsboro FFA treats HHS staff

On Feb. 21 the Hillsboro FFA provided lunch for the Hillsboro High School staff in honor of National FFA Week. They put together a pork nacho line which was well received by the staff. The members put together the idea, went shopping for ingredients, made the food and set up the food line. The pork for the nachos was provided from Alex Walker. FFA members are very appreciative of the HHS staff and have learned how to serve and give back to their community. SSCC PTK attends awards conference

The Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Ohio Region Awards Conference was held on Friday, March 8 and Saturday, March 9. The event was hosted by Cuyahoga Community College. Southern State’s chapter had four officers and one advisor in attendance. In total, 14 chapters were in represented. This was a time of fellowship, celebration and business proceedings.

27th Hillsboro FFA Consignment Auction

The Hillsboro FFA Chapter recently hosted its 27th annual Hillsboro FFA Alumni Consignment Auction. The chapter partners with the Rick Williams Auction Company to put on the auction every year. The FFA members take on many jobs to make sure the auction runs as smooth as possible including parking, item numbers, Friday night set up, clean up, checking out machinery, manning the food booth and grilling. The chapter we had approximately 50 members show up to help. The chapter said it is thankful for all the tractor help, alumni volunteers, ring men, clerks, office help, consignors, buyers and parents who volunteered. There were 34 online buyers, 104 consignors, 519 registered bidders, 1,068 items clerked and 97.2% of the items sold. Scene from the auction are shown in these pictures.

SSCC Theatre will present ‘Firebringer’

The theatre department at Southern State Community College presents “Firebringer,” with music and lyrics by Meredith Stepien and Mark Swiderski, book by Matt Lang, Nick Lang and Brian Holden, and arranged by Clark Baxtresser and Pierce Siebers, playing April 12-14 in the Edward K. Daniels Auditorium on the Southern State Central Campus, 100 Hobart Drive, Hillsboro.

Berwanger in state top 4

Fairfield FFA member Adam Berwanger was a top four state finalist for his Diversified Crop Production Proficiency. He will interview at the end of March to finalize his placing in this division. In his project Berwanger managed about 41 acres of hay, wheat and beans for resale. He purchased the seed, planted it, performed all the fertilization and spraying, then harvested and resold the crops. His overall career goal is to be a full-time farmer. This project has been ongoing since the start of his high school career and is still active. Berwanger will find out at the Ohio FFA State Convention this May what his final placing will be and if his application will move on to the national level.
