Echoes from a storied past
Bell’s Opera House on South High Street in Hillsboro stands as a prominent reminder of the legacy of C.S. Bell, a manufacturer of bells whose successful business ventures in centuries past and subsequent philanthropy transformed turn-of-the-century Hillsboro. It had, however, been bereft of the presence of Bell family members, following the death of the last of C.S. Bell’s surviving children, Cora E. Bell, in 1951.
Veterans Day at HHS
Students stand at attention as Highland County Veterans Honor Guard members salute the flag Friday during a Veterans Day observance at Hillsboro High School. All five public school districts in the county held some type of Veterans Day program program Friday. The actual date for Veterans Day this year is Saturday, Nov. 11.

WCTU makes stop in Hillsboro
The Highland County Historical Society honored the 150th anniversary of the Women’s Christian Temperance March that took place Dec. 24 and 26, 1873, in Hillsboro by hosting representatives Thursday of the WCTU from Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky.

A Hillsboro woman lost her life, but a juvenile in her vehicle was not injured, in a two-vehicle head-on crash Thursday in Clinton County.
Greenfield man sentenced to two years
Jordy Vangundy, 37, Greenfield, was sentenced in Highland County Common Pleas Court to 24 months in prison on one count of aggravated trafficking in methamphetamine in the vicinity of a school zone, a third-degree felony.
Issues 1 and 2 pass statewide, but fail locally
State Issue 1 to establish an individual right to one’s own reproductive medical treatment, including abortion, and State Issue 2 to legalize marijuana both unofficially passed in Ohio with the majority of Highland County voters opposed to both issues.

Teen rescued from grain bin
A Leesburg area teenager was so stuck in a grain bin Saturday that a cousin had to remove corn from his mouth to keep him breathing. But thanks to rescue personnel, neighbors and God, according to the 17-year-old male’s mother, he is OK.
