The Great Oaks Career Campuses Board of Directors has chosen Ben Vanhorn of Chillicothe to serve as the district’s new treasurer and chief financial officer, effective Aug. 1, 2017.

In this role, Vanhorn will oversee the financial operations of Great Oaks Career Campuses, the accuracy and timeliness of all state and federal reporting, the development of the annual district budget and the district’s Five-Year Forecast.

For the past 21 years, Vanhorn has served as the treasurer/CFO of the Pickaway-Ross Career and Technology Center in Ross County. Before beginning his career as a school treasurer, he held positions in corporate accounting for Nationwide Insurance Enterprise. Vanhorn received both a bachelor’s degree in finance and accounting and a master’s degree in business administration from Franklin University.

He has held key leadership roles in the Ohio Association of Career and Technical Education (Ohio ACTE) including as former chairman of the treasurer’s advisory committee for all southern Ohio school districts and as president of Ohio Association of Career Technical School Treasurers. He is active in the Legislative Committee of the Ohio Association of School Business Officials where he has been involved in legislative initiatives to support and advocate for career technical school funding. Vanhorn is also active in his local community and is currently a member and treasurer of the First Capital Rotary Club of Chillicothe.

The Great Oaks Board of Directors received assistance in the hiring process from K-12 Business Consulting and the Ohio Association of School Business Officials. After developing a treasurer search profile that was based on information provided by board of education members, community members, teachers, administrators, and support staff, a statewide search was undertaken to find the next CFO. A board committee screened and vetted the credentials of several potential candidates. Three finalists were selected for interview from 11 official applicants. Interviews with the finalists were conducted by the board committee on May 6. Following a detailed and thorough interview process, Vanhorn was selected as the unanimous choice.

Vanhorn replaces Rob Giuffre, who is retiring after 10 years as Great Oaks treasurer/CFO.

Great Oaks Career Campuses is a public school district offering career and technical training for both high school students and adults. With four campuses and programs in over 25 area schools, Great Oaks annually helps over 17,000 high school students to prepare for careers and college, and for thousands of adults to get training and certification to begin a new career or advance in a current career. The district serves 36 school districts in a 12-county, 2,200 square-mile of southwest Ohio.
