Adena Emergency Medicine Residency Program accredited

Adena Health System’s Graduate Medical Education (GME) program has achieved another major milestone. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) has awarded initial accreditation to Adena’s Emergency Medicine (EM) Residency Program.

This means all four of Adena’s GME programs – Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine and the Transitional Year Internship Program – have now earned ACGME accreditation status.

“This is a tremendous accomplishment for Adena’s GME program, and for its leadership, faculty, staff and residents,” said Adena’s GME Executive Director Edward Onusko, M.D. “With all four of our resident programs earning AGCME accreditation, Adena continues to demonstrate it is among the nation’s best programs for graduate medical education and training. New physicians can be confident that when they come to Adena, they will have the most positive and rewarding resident experience.”

Adena and all U.S. medical residency programs must become accredited by the ACGME under a new Single Accreditation System (SAS) that goes into effect in 2020. This single GME accreditation system will allow graduates of allopathic (M.D.) and osteopathic (D.O.) medical schools to complete their residency and/or fellowship education in ACGME-accredited programs.

To receive full accreditation, ACGME requires a rigorous application process that requires staff to provide proof that the standards outlined in the 40-page Program Requirements for Emergency Medicine are met. These requirements include curriculum standards, faculty credentials (credentials, research and scholarly activity), and adequate volume and acuity of patients seen in the Adena Emergency Department.

“Accreditation is just the beginning,” said Michael Pallaci, DO, director of Adena Emergency Medicine Residency Program. “Our program continues to attract talented and prestigious students and faculty, and will continue to make Adena a top place to learn, to work, and to receive care.”
