The Aerial's Extreme Mini Cheerleading Team beat out six large gyms from Ohio and Indiana recently to win first place at the JamFest Holiday Jam at the Dayton Convention Center.

"The team had an outstanding performance," coach Angie Layne said. "This was a large competition with over 150 teams from Ohio and surrounding states. The teams that we beat included some very reputable large gyms from Cincinnati, Dayton and Indianapolis. This 8-year-old and under team is loaded with talent. Many of the skills that they perform are equal to that of a high school or collegiate team. They are a very highly motivated group of young people and a real joy to coach. We have had other athletes from Aerial's go on to earn scholarships for cheerleading at such schools as The Ohio State University and the University of Cincinnati. I see many more future collegiate cheerleaders in this young group."

With the first-place finish, the team earned a gold bid (the highest bid possible) to the JamFest Super Nationals. The team traveled to Indianapolis in late January and competed in the second largest cheerleading competition in the world. There were nearly 500 teams and 11,000 cheerleaders competing. The team finished 17th in the competition, ahead of all other Ohio teams with the exception of one.

Also competing at the JamFest Holiday Jam and Super Nationals was the Aerial's Extreme Youth Team. This group of 7- to 11-year-olds performed excellent routines at both events. Despite illness, injuries and other obstacles, the team finished fifth at the Holiday Jam and 10th overall at the super nationals.

Aerial's Senior Cheerleading Team (11- to 16-year-olds) earned a fourth-place finish at the Holiday Jam and a silver bid to the super nationals. The team chose not to attend the event in Indianapolis so that they could save for their trip to the UCA Gulf Coast Championship in Panama City, Fla. at the end of April.

The season is quickly coming to an end for the Aerial's Extreme Cheerleading Teams. The mini and youth teams will finish their season when they travel to Columbus on March 1-2 to compete at the Arnold Classic Nationals.

If you are interested in learning more about the Aerial's Extreme Cheerleading Program, contact Layne, former Morehead State University coach and cheerleader, at the Wilmington gym at (937) 383-5700 or e-mail angie@aerialsathletics.com.
