Rosenberger in Hillsboro

Speaker of the Ohio House Clifford A. Rosenberger (R-Clarksville) will hold district office hours in Highland County on Thursday, Oct. 13 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Highland County District Library, 10 Willettsville Pike, Hillsboro.

Highland SWCD Annual Meeting

The Highland Soil & Water Conservation District 74rd Annual Meeting will be held Oct. 13 at the Highland County Training & Employment Center (Hi-Tec), 1575 N. High St., Hillsboro from 5:30-7 p.m. The Highland SWCD will be hosting a social gathering with light refreshments. Program highlights include the supervisor election from 5:30–6:30 p.m. and the presentation of awards at 6:30 p.m. Two supervisors will be elected to serve a three-year term. Jim Carr, Kyle Mustard and Alex Walker are the candidates. You may vote on the evening of the meeting or by requesting an absentee ballot in writing no later than three days prior to the election. Requests should be mailed to the Highland SWCD office at 514 Harry Sauner Rd. Suite 2 Hillsboro. Reservations are not required to attend the annual meeting.

Southern Ohio Genealogical Society

The History of American Immigration and Naturalization will be the topic of the Southern Ohio Genealogical Society meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13 at the North High Business Center, 1487 N. High St., Hillsboro, in the Community Room. The public is welcome. Mel Haines will present a Power Point presentation on how our ancestors immigrated to America and became naturalized citizens. He will also cover tips on how to determine when and where they landed in this new country.

Highland County PERI

The Highland County Chapter of Public Employee Retirees Inc. will meet at 10 a.m. be Oct. 13 at the Highland County Senior Citizen Center, 185 Muntz, St. Hillsboro. The speaker will be Ohio Speaker of the House Cliff Rosenberger. All members and guest are welcome.

Medicare help at senior center

The Ohio Department of Insurance will be at the Highland County Senior Citizens Center at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 14 to provide the community with a discussion on Medicare 101. For additional assistance with Medicare questions, an appointment may be made with an Ohio Department of Insurance counselor after the discussion at the senior center. Call the center at 393-4745 to make your appointment and for additional info. Lunch will be available.

Marshall Fall Fun-Fest

The Marshall School Committee wil host a Fall Fun-Fest at the Marshall School Gymnasium from 4-7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15. There will be a variety of carnival games, grocery bingo, popcorn and cake walks. Game tickets will be 25 cents each or five for $1. Refreshments of sloppy joes, coney dogs, chicken and noodles, macaroni and cheese and homemade pies will be available. A costume contest will be held at 6 p.m. Registration is from 4 to 5:30 p.m. All proceeds will be used for the renovation and upkeep of the Marshall School Gymnasium. Pet adoption event

The Ventura Feed & Country Store, Highland County Humane Society and Homer will host a pet adoption event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15 at 402 N. West St., Hillsboro. There will be reduced adoption fees, games, a bake slake, prizes and a raffle for assorted dog items and an American Girl Doll.

Dodsonville Wild Game Dinner

The Dodsonville Community Church will hold its fifth annual Wild Game Dinner at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15 at 1810 U.S. Route 50, Lynchburg. There will be adult raffles for two guns and a kids raffle for a youth gun. There will door prizes, home cooked wild game plus other menu items, and Tom Coogan will be the guest speaker. New Hope Baptist Youth Day

The New Hope Baptist Church, 128 E. Beech St., Hillsboro, will celebrate Youth Day on Sunday, Oct. 16. The guest speaker will be Brent Burns from the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Dayton. The worship begins at 11 a.m. Everyone is invited.

Historial society meal

The Highland County Historical Society invites the public to join it for a meal from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16. This meal will recreate the weekly Sunday meal that June Doorley hosted beginning back in 1949 when she took over the Highland House Inn, where she was proprietress until 1964. Doorley’s bountiful table was famous throughout the county. The menu will include fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, salad, and biscuits. Dessert will be white cake or date nut pudding. Doorley’s own recipes will be used to recreate her delicious meal. Although Doorley’s meal tickets were a bargain at 50 cents, a donation of $10 for this meal will be requested. This meal will be by reservation only by calling the Highland House Museum at 393-3392. No reservations will be taken after Friday, Oct. 14.

Fairfield Concert Choir

The Fairfield Local High School Concert Choir will perform at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19 at the high school. Admission to the concert will be one non-perishable food item. The food items will be donated to the Leesburg Community Center Food Pantry.

Meal preparation class

The monthly class in meal preparation will be held at the Greenfield Area Christian Center Community Room, 910 N. Fifth St., at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19. Participants will take home their prepared dish along with recipes and the ingredients for another dish. Call 937-981-7176 to reserve your space.

Lynchburg-Clay Alumni Reunion

SOESC Records Commission

The Southern Ohio Educational Service Center Governing Board Records Commission will meet at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25 at the Southern Ohio Educational Service Center, 39 Willettsville Pike, Hillsboro, to review records retention and disposal matters.

Humane Society annual meeting

The Highland County Humane Society will hold its annual meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25 in the basement of the Highland County Administration Building, 119 Gov. Foraker Place, Hillsboro.

Nazarene Trunk or Treat

The Hillsboro Church of the Nazarene is hosting More Than a Trunk or Treat on Wednesday, Oct. 26 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. You are invited to join in the night of fun and candy. Activities will include trunk or treating, carnival games and refreshments. Businesses, individuals and candidates for elected offices who are interested in setting up a trunk should contact the church office at 937-393-3545.

Soup’s On free meal

The Soup’s On free meal will be served Saturday, Oct. 29 at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, corner of North High and North streets, Hillsboro. Prayer and praise are at 4:30 p.m. ande dinner is served 5-6 p.m. The menu will feature: chicken BBQ on a bun, mac and cheese, vegetable medley, assorted drinks and desserts. The meal is served eat-in only.

Hillsboro FFA hosting 5K

The Hillsboro FFA Chapter will hold a 5K race on Oct. 29 at Rocky Fork State Park (9800 North Shore Drive). Registration will begin at 8 a.m. and the race will begin at 9 a.m. The fee is $25; however, if you preregister by Oct. 14, the fee is $20 and includes a free T-shirt. To preregister, pick up a form in the main office or ag department at Hillsboro High School. The forms are also available online at hcs-k12.org. All proceeds go toward Adopt-A-Family, helping provide Christmas gifts to local families in need.

Open Door free meal

The Open Door free meal at the Greenfield United Methodist Church will be held on Saturday, Oct. 29. Serving will be from 4 until 4:30 p.m. The menu will be chili, crackers, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and applesauce. Everyone is welcome.

GACC Showcase Open House

The Greenfield Area Christian Center will host a Ministry Showcase Open House from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30. The community is invited to stop by and come see the center and learn about the work the various ministries are doing in the community.

Altrusa Book Sale

Altrusa of Highland County is preparing for the annual Altrusa/AAUW book sale. Barrels for the collection of gently used books have been placed in the Hillsboro, Greenfield, Lynchburg and Leesburg public libraries in addition to Kroger and the Community Markets in Hillsboro and Greenfield. No magazines, encyclopedias, texts or condensed books, please. The book sale will be held at the Giovanni Pizza/Rent 2 Own shopping mall on North High Street in Hillsboro on Friday, Nov. 4 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 5 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Proceeds will provide local scholarships and literacy projects.

Veterans Appreciation Night

The fourth annual Veterans Appreciation Night and Open House, hosted by the Highland County Veterans Service Office, will be held from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11 at the Hi-TEC Center Conference Rooms, 1575 N. High St., Hillsboro. Light refreshments will be served.
