Rotary provides students dictionaries and thesauruses

As part of its ongoing efforts to serve the community, the Greenfield Rotary Club delivered dictionaries and thesauruses to elementary students Thursday across the Greenfield Exempted Village School District.

About this time each year third graders receive a dictionary and fifth graders receive a thesaurus, each hand-delivered by members of the Greenfield Rotary Club. The books are the students’ to keep, and students can put their name on the inside cover of the book on a sticker bearing Rotary’s Four-Way Test, which is the club’s moral code for conducting not only business, but personal relationships.

Distribution days are typically met with excitement from the students. This year, 149 third graders received dictionaries and 162 fifth graders got thesauruses.

The Hillsboro Rotary club also distributes dictionaries to third graders in Highland County each year. Both the Greenfield and Hillsboro Rotary clubs have been involved in The Dictionary Project for more than a decade.

According to the mission statement of The Dictionary Project, the goal “is to assist all students in becoming good writers, active readers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners by providing them with their own personal dictionary.”

Assisting the students in local school districts goes right along the goal of Rotary clubs around the world, with members adhering to the motto of “service above self” through projects, both locally and globally, that provide education, support communities and schools, combat hunger, improve health and sanitation, promote peace, and eradicate polio.

On other Rotary business, the Greenfield Rotary Club is hosting a Greene Countrie Towne Festival meeting on Monday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. in the McClain cafeteria. The public is welcome to attend and provide input on the annual festival sponsored by the Greenfield Rotary Club.
