Edward Lee McClain’s granddaughter and her children will be in attendance at the centennial celebration for McClain High School set for Labor Day weekend, according to Greenfield Exempted Village School District Superintendent Joe Wills.

Wills reported at Monday’s school board meeting that McClain’s family attending has been confirmed.

District treasurer Joe Smith said that a member of the centennial committee traveled to Georgia where McClain’s granddaughter lives and spoke with the family about the upcoming celebration.

On a related matter, Wills reported that the centennial committee has recently printed programs for the event and they are available at businesses throughout Greenfield.

McClain High School was dedicated on Sept. 1, 1915 and the first students eventually filed into its hallways and classrooms, which are dotted with approximately 200 art pieces — reliefs, murals, statues and paintings that remain today.

The centennial celebration event is set for Sept. 4-6 and will include tours of the high school, a Centennial Tea, an ice cream social, a 5K run/walk, a dance, continuous video of historical films of McClain High School and Greenfield, a rededication ceremony, and more.

In other business, Smith reported that while the state has a budget for next year determined, the school district won’t know what its state funding will be until October. He said a formula to determine how funds will be distributed among the state’s school districts is being worked out.

Smith passed a checklist out to board of education members of items to watch for “as the funding formula unfolds.”

Wills also reported that patching on the track is nearly complete, and that it has “turned out better than expected.” Work to the high-jump area has also been completed, he said.

Roofing at Rainsboro Elementary is expected to begin soon, he said, and there is concrete work that is to be completed in front of the Greenfield Elementary building and the bus garage at the corner of Fifth Street and McClain Avenue.

In other business, and among the items approved on the consent agenda, a $30,000 donation was accepted from the estate of McClain graduate Darlene Faye McCain.

Also accepted on the consent agenda were the resignations of the following personnel: Cathy Rivas, elementary art teacher; Matt Shelton for the positions of science department leader, high school technology aide, and girls golf coach; Elaine Nichols for the positions of high school social studies teacher and sophomore class adviser; Erika Silvey, high school language arts teacher; and Lynda Ralph.

On other personnel matters, board members accepted the following recommendations for employment: Lori Boatman Tuttle, high school language arts; Jennifer Drummond Singleton, elementary art; Marvin Joe Roberts III, high school social studies and assistant football coach; Dan Raike, high school counselor; Kim Howard, aide; Emily Booth, aide; Lindsey Highley, aide; Jeffrey Williams, bus driver; Susan Bogard, bus driver; Becky Hudson, cafeteria; Christel Dalton, aide; Jarrod Haines, girls golf coach; Ashley Kesler, science department leader; Nathan Luke, high school technology aide; Braden Streitenberger, eighth-grade football; Kris Davis, technology aide at Greenfield Elementary; Karen Mullikin, Buckskin technology aide; Dylan Trefz, assistant football; and Jesse Mitchell, fall weight room supervisor.

The next regular meeting of the Greenfield Exempted Village School District Board of Education is scheduled for Aug. 17 at 7 p.m. in the central office boardroom.
