A Washington Court House woman was evacuated by medical helicopter Friday afternoon after losing control of her vehicle on U.S. 62 near New Market, striking a mailbox and colliding with a telephone pole.

The accident occurred several miles south of New Market on U.S. Route 62, causing a traffic to be backed up about a half mile north of the scene. Traffic was moving about an hour after the accident occurred.

According to Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Todd Stevens, a woman was driving westbound on Route 62 when she lost control of her vehicle, drove through the oncoming lane and struck a mailbox.

Stevens said the vehicle then overcorrected, careening into a ditch along the side of the road and finally colliding with a telephone pole.

The woman, identified as Patricia Howard, 42, Washington Court House, was evacuated from the scene via medical helicopter and taken to UC Health.

Emergency crews had to use the Jaws of Life to remove the driver’s side door from the vehicle to extract Howard.

An emergency worker on scene told The Times-Gazette that Howard was in critical condition with possible head trauma and rib injuries.

Stevens said the crash is currently under investigation. He said it’s unknown at this time whether or not distractions, drugs or alcohol were a factor.
