Teen released from treatment

A 17-year-old ordered to undergo treatment after an arrest that led to the discovery of heroin when she was at the jail has been released.

As previously reported, the girl was with three adults at the time of her February arrest, and when brought to the Justice Center she was found to have suspected heroin on her person after she had told officers that she did not have any drugs or weapons.

She later admitted in Highland County Juvenile Court to a third-degree felony charge of illegal conveyance and was ordered to successfully complete treatment at the Miami Valley Juvenile Rehabilitation Center.

On Friday, the teen was placed on community control, on which she can remain until the age of 21 if the court deems that length of probation to be appropriate.

In other hearings, a mother of six children, ranging in age from newborn to 9 years old, this week admitted to the dependency of the children. The children are now all in the temporary custody of Highland County Children Services.

The case was initiated in early June after the mother, according to the complaint, tested positive for multiple drugs, multiple times during the pregnancy of the youngest child.

Similarly, another case saw temporary custody of a newborn go to Children Services due to the mother’s drug use.

Temporary custody of a 9-year-old in another case will remain with Children Services after a motion requesting custody of the child to go to relatives was denied.

The 9-year-old was previously found to be a dependent child.

A dependent child is defined by Ohio law as: one who is homeless, destitute or lacking in adequate parental care through no fault of the child’s guardians; a child who lacks the adequate parental care due to the mental or physical condition of the child’s guardians; whose condition or environment is such as to warrant the state, in the interests of the child, in assuming the child’s guardianship.

In other hearings, a 13-year-old boy failed to appear for a Friday hearing and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

The boy was on probation for misdemeanor assault from a case earlier this year. He also faces two additional charges of criminal mischief.

A 14-year-old boy admitted to criminal mischief. He received a 90-day suspended commitment to detention and is to perform community service. He was also forbidden to be on any property at Rocky Fork Lake that belongs to the state of Ohio.
