Three to hospital after wreck north of Hillsboro

A mid-morning wreck Friday on SR 73 just north of Hillsboro sent three to the hospital after a man apparently had a seizure while driving out of town.

Trooper Jeremy Priest of the Ohio State Highway Patrol told The Times-Gazette on scene that Charles Craig, 55, Middletown, was driving northbound on SR 73 between Harry Sauner Road and Hobart Drive in a burgundy Ford Mustang when he apparently had some type of seizure, causing him to drive the car left of center.

Craig’s vehicle struck a southbound silver Chevrolet Malibu driven by Susan Ison, 57, Leesburg, causing it to spin out and slide down an embankment on the opposite side of the road, Priest said. Ison’s vehicle came to rest near a tree in the front yard of a nearby residence, about 500 feet from the initial impact.

Craig’s vehicle drove through the oncoming lane and smashed into a nearby storage building.

Emergency crews had to cut the door off Craig’s vehicle to get him out, according to witnesses.

Both Craig and a passenger were transported by ground to Highland District Hospital, as well as one passenger from the Malibu, according to Priest.

On the scene, Ison was preparing to go to the hospital to be checked for minor injuries after intially refusing treatment.

Priest said he was surprised Ison’s vehicle didn’t roll due to the grade of the hill.

“That’s quite an embankment,” he said.

The conditions of the three people hospitalized were not immediately known.

The accident had SR 73 down to one lane for about an hour and a half late Friday morning.
