Members of the Hillsboro City Schools Board of Education lauded new superintendent Tim Davis during a Wednesday meeting for his efforts in making the first few days of school a success for teachers and students.
Board member Tom Milbery said that of all the opening days he’s attended at Hillsboro throughout the years, this year’s opening stood out as one of the best.
“It always kind of sets the tone,” Milbery said. “This year was incredibly good… It’s good to see the school year off to a great start.”
Board member Larry Lyons applauded Davis for planning last week’s “all-district day” when teachers reported back to school. The event featured performances from cheerleaders and band members, creating a pep-rally atmosphere for the staff’s return, as reported by The Times-Gazette.
Davis said the first two days of school on Tuesday and Wednesday went well, and no issues were reported.
“We had two really solid days,” he said. “A lot of excitement in the buildings… We’re very pleased with the way school has started.”
Also Wednesday, the board conducted the following business:
• Approved the resignation of Maggie (Lisa) Smith, a preschool aide, effective Aug. 1; and Stacie Young, an elementary aide, effective Aug. 8.
• Approved numerous individuals for various contracts and positions in the school district.
• Approved Milbery as a track volunteer.
• Approved bus routes for the 2017-2018 school year.
• Approved the repair of a retaining wall at the middle school and high school.
• Approved an eighth-grade trip to Washington, D.C. from May 1-May 4 of next year.
• Approved a donation for elementary school supplies from an anonymous donor in the amount of $36.50.
• Approved contracts with Haugland Learning Center in Columbus for servicing two special-needs students.
• Approved a memorandum of understanding between Hillsboro City Schools and the Highland County Board of Developmental Disabilities regarding transition training for special needs students.
• Heard from Davis about improvements to the city’s athletic facilities.
• Heard from board member Beverly Rhoads about a number of meetings she attended in recent weeks.
• Took no action after going into executive session to discuss an issue involving an employee.
