Helping victims of domestic violence in Highland County

The Alternatives to Violence Center’s popular Trivia Night Fundraiser will be held Friday, Oct. 6, according to office manager Dara Gullette.

Gullette attended a Highland County Board of Commissioners meeting Wednesday morning with advocates and employees of the Alternatives to Violence Center, a local nonprofit that offers crisis care for victims of domestic violence in Highland and Clinton counties.

Gullette said the event, now in its seventh year, will be held at the Backroom Paradise, 6174 Miller Lane, Hillsboro, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 6.

Tickets are $20 per person, and dinner and entertainment are included, Gullette said.

Gullette said those wishing to sponsor the event can pay $100, $50 of which will be put toward victim services expenses, and the remainder will contribute to cash prizes for first, second and third place teams.

Gullette said registration will be cut off at 25 tables with a minimum of five people per table and a maximum of 10. There will be three rounds of trivia with intermission games, as well as giveaways, raffles and dinner.

This year’s theme is “Prom Gone Wrong,” and Gullette said a contest will be held for the best high school prom photos submitted. To submit a photo, email Gullette at [email protected].

“All the money raised during the event goes to victim services, which includes emergency shelter for victims, transportation, down payments on a safe place to stay, food, shelter, especially if we have to relocate them quickly and don’t have anything available,” Gullette told The Times-Gazette before the meeting.

The commissioners recognized Gullette and the workers at the Alternatives to Violence Center for their efforts, and declared October Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The Alternatives to Violence Center offers services in both Highland and Clinton counties. The Highland County office, located in Hillsboro, can be reached at 937-393-8118, and the Clinton County office, located in Wilmington, can be reached at 937-383-3285.

Gullette said the Clinton County facility will open a rape crisis center Oct. 1 that will have an exam room and nurses on staff.

In another matter Wednesday, Alice Anne Yankee, who lives just outside of Greenfield, complained of a leaky tile drain on her property that has caused water buildup and mold problems in her shed.

After some discussion, commissioners Terry Britton and Shane Wilkin said a contractor will take a look at the issue and a determination will be made on what to do.

Wilkin gave a final reminder that Smokin’ in the Hills, a barbecue competition and military appreciation event, will be held Friday and Saturday at Rocky Fork State Park in the East Shore area, and encouraged members of the public to participate in the Patriot Challenge, a canoe race and obstacle course that will benefit a military memorial.

More information can be found on the Smokin’ in the Hills Facebook page.

The commissioners also approved routine financial resolutions and held an executive session to discuss economic development. No action was taken.
