The Hillsboro Police Department on Monday warned residents via Facebook of reported counterfeit money that was recently used at a business here.

The HPD’s Facebook page posted a brief message and photos of a fake $50 bill, which was recently passed at Flagway in Hillsboro, according to HPD interim chief Shawn Kelley.

Kelley told The Times-Gazette on Monday that the matter is being investigated.

“It was more than likely purchased online, like on Ebay,” he said. “We know who passed it, and the investigating officer has spoken with the person. They’re advising they didn’t know it was counterfeit.”

Kelley said the Facebook post, which had already been shared more than 360 times Monday afternoon, was intended to raise awareness of the issue.

“We just wanted to kind of put it out there so people will keep an eye out,” he said. “This is the only one we’ve found so far. It does look similar, but once you look at it, you can tell.”

While that type of bill may look real at first glance, a closer look reveals the words, “For motion picture use only,” and “This note is not legal, it is to be used for motion pictures,” as well as other incorrect details.

Those who encounter counterfeit bills are asked to call the HPD at 937-393-3411.
