It has been a holiday tradition for nearly three decades and it will open Friday, Nov. 10 at a new location.

It is the Hillsboro Lions Club Candy Store, which will open for the 28th year at 957 N. High St., the former location of Dr. Sophela Mesina’s office.

The store will remain open until at least Christmas Eve, offering 82 selections of candy plus the popular corn brooms, along with gift items that are new this year.

The store will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Some of the traditional candy favorites include fudge, buckeyes, nuts, trail mixes, peanuts and reduced sugar selections.

The corn brooms are offered in four sizes – heavy duty broom, regular sized broom, child’s toy broom and the whisk broom.

New candy selections this year include black licorice, buttermints, fruit flavored starlights, honey roasted sesame sticks, lemon drops, licorice starlights, peppermint lumps, root beer barrels and snackers party mix.

In addition to those items, several choices of gift items are available including candy jars, cans and baskets, along with gift bags and tags. A club spokesperson said that with the addition of those items, the store is more like a one-stop gift shop.

Proceeds from the store benefit the Hillsboro Lions Club and the projects its supports throughout the year. All proceeds stay in the local community, the spokesperson said.

If the store has candy still left after Christmas Eve, it may stay open a little longer.

“The club wishes to thank the community for supporting the candy store for the last 27 years and they look forward to seeing you again this year,” the Lions Club said in a news release.
