With the general election approaching on Tuesday, Nov. 5, the Highland County Board of Elections has announced deadlines to register and times to vote.

“The deadline to register to vote in this election is Monday, Oct. 7, 2019. On this day our office will have extended hours from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.,” the election board said in a news release. “Voter registrations are available in the board office, local public library, Bureau of Motor Vehicles or county treasurer’s office. If you are already a current registered voter and need to update your address you can go to www.highlandcountyelections.com and update online.”

To register to vote in Highland County, you must be a current resident of Highland County, 18 years or older and a U.S. citizen. If you have any questions, contact the board of elections office.

Early voting begins on Tuesday, Oct. 8. The board’s hours of operation are listed below for regular municipal elections, primary elections and special elections.

For weeks one, two and three of voting, beginning with the day after the close of registration for the election, except any holiday established by state law, the hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

For week four of voting the hours are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Saturday before Election Day, and 1-5 p.m. on the Sunday before Election Day.

The week of Election Day the hours are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Monday before Election Day.

Any voters in line at the end of these regular business hours must be permitted to cast a ballot.

The board of elections said it will host an open house for the public to view its new voting equipment and to ask any questions on Wednesday, Oct. 2 from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the board office, 1575 N. High St., Suite 200, Hillsboro.
