Jackman council chair

Members of the Greenfield Village Council met on New Year’s Day for the annual organizational meeting, appointing the council’s chairperson and vice-chairperson and swearing in three members.

Last year’s council chair Betty Jackman was once again chosen for the position. Bob Bergstrom was chosen to fill the position of vice chair, which he also held last year.

The Ohio Revised Code mandates that a council such as Greenfield’s shall meet on Jan. 1 each year to elect a chairperson and a vice chairperson, and that regular meetings are to be held twice monthly.

Also on Friday, but prior to the organizational meeting, Highland County Court Judge Robert Judkins administered the oath of office to re-elected members Bergstrom and Chris Borreson, and to newly-elected member Mark Clyburn.

Bergstrom begins his newest term after having already served 16 years on the village council, and Borreson just began his second term. Clyburn begins his inaugural term after being elected over veteran council member Bill Redenbaugh in the November election.

A matter likely to crop up this year with the council is the possibility of a communitywide residential trash service. Legislation passed in November authorized city manager Ron Coffey to seek proposals for such a service, and at council’s last meeting of 2015, two proposals that had been received were discussed.

For now, those proposals have gone to council’s Health, Safety, and Welfare committee for study and review.

Also anticipated for the new year is the completion of the multi-million dollar rehabilitation project of Greenfield’s 29-mile rail spur.

Coffey said in December that the bulk of the railroad work is complete, but there are some things yet to finish. He estimated that the whole rehab project could be completed within the first quarter of 2016.

The next regular meeting of the Greenfield Village Council will be Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. in council chambers located on the first floor of the City Building. The meeting is open to the public and is generally telecast live on the local cable television access channel.
