A Hillsboro woman died after being flown to Miami Valley Hospital following a single-vehicle crash on SR 73 at Diven Road on Monday morning, according to information released by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Mary A. Peterson, 69, Hillsboro, was heading south on SR 73 when she traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a guardrail, the state patrol said in a statement. The vehicle “went over an embankment, rolled over, and came to rest on its top in a creek.”

James T. Peterson, 29, Hillsboro, was a passenger in the vehicle, the state patrol said.

While both occupants were transported to Highland District Hospital, Mary Peterson was taken from there by helicopter to Miami Valley Hospital where she was pronounced dead, the state patrol statement says.

According to the statement, both occupants were wearing their seat belts.

Branden Jackman, public information officer with the Paint Creek Joint EMS/Fire District, said the Hillsboro station was dispatched to the crash at 7 a.m.

Jackman said bystanders assisted the passenger out of the vehicle prior to Paint Creek’s arrival and he was transported to HDH with non-life threatening injuries. The driver had to be extricated, Jackman said, and that took about 10 minutes.

Jackman said the driver “was pulseless” when she was removed from the vehicle, but emergency personnel were able to resuscitate her.

Responding to the scene along with Paint Creek were the Highland County Sheriff’s Office and the Ohio State Highway Patrol, which is handling the investigation.
