First Friday returns May 6

A return to the cruise-ins that were prominent during the early years of the Hillsboro Uptown Business Association’s First Friday events will be a theme again this year.

An artisan fair and classic car cruise-in will be the featured events of HUBA’s next First Friday event slated for Friday, May 6. The events typically run from around 5-8 p.m.

Applications for artisans are still being accepted to display and sell their creations, according to HUBA President Joe Mahan.

“This is a juried fair and a small application fee of $10 is required. Artisans will need to supply their own tables, chairs, etc.,” Mahan said. “And there is no electric available. HUBA is looking for all types of artworks: metal, leather, wood, weaving, palette, clay, jams and jellies, candies, etc., as long as it is handmade. Sorry, no direct sales companies (i.e. Avon, Tupperware, etc.) are being accepted for this event.”

This will be a sidewalk fair. The artisan application is available on the HUBA website: www.hillsborohuba.weebly.com/.

For the cruise-in, vehicles will be on display around the Highland County Courthouse. Music will be provided by Charlie Hargrave of Chazziz D.J. Service. There is no charge for entries in the cruise-in.

“HUBA’s First Friday events are held to encourage people to come out and explore what uptown Hillsboro has to offer in the way of shopping, dining, entertainment and socializing,” Mahan said.

The First Friday event schedule for the rest of 2016 is as follows:

• Friday, June 3 – Highland County Relay For Life Kickoff & Cruise-In.

• Friday, Aug. 5 – Back to School Bash & Cruise-In.

• Friday, Sept. 2 – Cruise-in the ‘Boro & Homecoming event.

• Friday, Oct. 7 – Harvest-Fest & Cruise-In.

• Friday, Nov. 4 – Uptown Open House.

• Friday, Dec. 2 – Uptown Christmas.

All First Friday events take place in the uptown Hillsboro historical district and are subject to change if the need arises.

HUBA also organizes the Festival of Bells Car Show, BOO-FEST, the Snowflake Pageant, a Moonlight Madness event, Shop Small Saturday, and the Lighted Christmas Parade. HUBA additionally maintains the flower pots and urns in the uptown district.
