T-G will honor 31 scholar-athletes

Whiteoak High School senior Ashleigh Harless has been added to the list of nominees for the 2016 Times-Gazette Highland County Scholar-Athlete Award. All 31 nominees will recognized and will receive an award at a dinner banquet set for 6 p.m. Thursday, June 23 at the Ponderosa Banquet Center in Hillsboro, where the overall winner will be announced and will receive a $200 scholarship.

The nominees are: Jake Badgley, McClain; Hanna Breeden, Hillsboro; Cassie Brooks, McClain; DJ Brown, Hillsboro; Heath Brown, Hillsboro; Sarah Buddlemeyer, Fairfield; Alexa Cochran, Lynchburg-Clay; Jhaela Coleman, McClain; Mackenzie Conlon, Hillsboro; Randi Conover, Fairfield; Jacob Deatley, Hillsboro; Anna Ehlers, McClain; Reaghan Haines, Hillsboro; Courtney Hall, Hillsboro; Cody Hardesty, McClain; Ashleigh Harless, Whiteoak; Tommy Henry, McClain; Alex Hollar, McClain; Grace Larrick, Fairfield; Ali Little, Lynchburg-Clay; Hannah Magie, Lynchburg-Clay; Randall Mischal, McClain; Emily Myers, Hillsboro; Ryan Page, McClain; Devin Pierson, Lynchburg-Clay; Kylie Potts, Fairfield; Ethan Putnam, Fairfield; Emma Reno, Hillsboro; Noah Scott, Lynchburg-Clay; Madison Snyder, Hillsboro; Jalyn Yochum, Hillsboro.

The banquet, where this year’s Highland County Athletic Hall of Fame inductees – Bob Bergstrom, Galen Neal, Jesse Mount and Craig Unger – will also be honored, is open to the public. The student-athletes, the coaches who nominated them, and the hall of fame inductees are the guests of The Times-Gazette. Tickets for anyone else wanting to attend are $16 each. They can be reserved by calling Jeff Gilliland at 937-402-2522 and can be picked up and paid for at the door the night of the event.

Each varsity coach in Highland County was offered the chance to nominate one student-athlete for the award for each sport they coached in the past school year. The nominees must have lettered in at least one sport during their senior year and carry at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

The winner is selected based on their athletic and academic accomplishments, as well as community service.
