Whiteoak Valley Grange
The Whiteoak Valley Grange, 19 E. Main St., Mowrystown, will serve breakfast from 8-11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 13. A variety of breakfast foods including pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, sausage gravy and biscuits, juice, milk and coffee will be offered for a donation. The Mowrystown Car Show will follow.
Also, monthly euchre parties held at 7 p.m. on the third Saturday night of each month. Progressive euchre is the main game, however, other card and board games are available for those who do not play euchre. Token prizes are awarded. The cost is $1.50 per person to play. Blue Steel playing for ACS
Join Highland County Relay for Life in a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society on Saturday Aug. 13. A benefit concert featuring Blue Steel will be held at the Paxton Theatre in Bainbridge starting at 7 p.m. Blue Steel plays classic rock favorites from the ’70s and ’80s. To support this cause purchase your tickets online for $12 at paxtontheatre.com or at the door for $15. A group rate of 10 or more tickets for $10 a piece is also available online or at the door.
Poker Run and Fun Day
New Life Ministries, 6101 SR 247, Hillsboro, will hold a Poker Run and Fun Day starting at 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 13. The last bike out for the poker run, which benefits the church, will be at 1 p.m. For more information call Jack Cyrus at 740-634-2919. The fun day will be held at the church and will include games for all ages (tickets five for $1), concessions, cake walk, split the pot, auction, flea market, and more. Pearl Street singing
The Pearl Street Church of Christ is hosting old-time gospel singing the first Sunday evening of every month. Everyone is invited. Refreshments are served after the service. The church is located at 330 Pearl St., Lynchburg.
Dodsonville ice cream social
The Dodsonville Community Church will hold at ice cream social at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13 at 1810 U.S. Route 50. There will be supper, homemade ice cream and games and for the kids cornhole, badminton and door prizes. All donations will go to the Highland County Homeless Shelter to be used for back to school necessities for the kids there.
Republican Family Picnic
The Highland County Republican Party Family Picnic will be held Sunday, Aug. 14 at 5 p.m. at the VFW Post 9091 Pavilion, 1000 W. Main St., Hillsboro. The cost is $5 per adult and kids eat free. State Senator Bob Peterson will speak and Republican candidates for this year’s election will be introduced. Representatives of the national and state campaigns will also be present. Everyone is welcome to attend.
GHS presentation Sunday
The life story of Augustus West, a slave who moved to Ohio in 1837 and was eventually allowed to purchase his freedom, will be told by Joyce Saulsbery-Dennis during a Greenfield Historical Society presentation at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14 in the Konneker Education Museum, 243 South Street, Greenfield.
HCA monthly dinner
The monthly donation dinner to benefit the Hillsboro Christian Academy will be held from 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14 at the Hillsboro Presbyterian Church, corner of East Main Street and East Street. The menu will be ham, scalloped potatoes, salad, dessert, and a beverage. Next month’s the dinner – fish fry and chicken and all the trimmings – will be the open house for the school on Sunday, Sept. 11 from noon to 4 p.m at 849 S. High St. so the public can see the new campus. Donations will benefit the HCA.
The Church of Christ in Christian Union on Beech Street in Hillsboro will host a homecoming at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 14. Pastor Danny Shafer will be preaching. There will be a carry-in dinner at noon and special singing and services at 1 p.m.
Wayman 190th anniversary service
The Wayman Chapel AME Church has announced the 190th anniversary service of the Wayman Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Hillsboro, on Aug. 14. An afternoon service will be held at 3 p.m. to celebrate God’s blessings over the 190 years. Presiding elder Melonie Valentine of the Dayton District will be the guest speaker. The theme for the year is “Breaking old chains.” Dinner will be served prior to the afternoon service at 2 p.m. The public is invited. If you are unable to attend, a token of support to make the celebration a success will be appreciated. The church will have a patron list.
New Hope 162nd celebration
The New Hope Baptist Church, 128 E. Beech St., Hillsboro, 162nd anniversary celebration will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14. The guest speaker will be pastor Jonathon McReynolds and congregation from the Oakley Full Gospel Baptist Church in Columbus. Everyone is welcome.
There will be a clinic for immunizations only from 1-4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 15 at the Highland County Health Department, 1487 N. High St., Suite, 400, Hillsboro.
Election board meeting
The Highland County Board of Elections will hold its monthly meeting at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16 in the board office. The public is welcome to attend.
Care-A-Van not running
The Highland County Health Department Care-A-Van will not be running as regularly scheduled Tuesday, Aug. 16. The health department will provide services in the office, located at 1487 N. The Highland County North Joint Fire/Ambulance District will hold a board meeting at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16 at 200 South St., Leesburg.
Colony, private property meeting
The Hillsboro Property Maintenance & Restoration Committee will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17 in the Hillsboro Firehouse Community Room to discuss a proposed private property ordinance, followed by a Colony Theatre façade/building planning meeting. Both meetings are open to the public.
Hillsboro School Board
The Hillsboro City Schools Board of Education will meet in regular session at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17 at the Hillsboro Board of Education Office, 39 Willettsville Pike.
Meal preparation class
A class in meal preparation will be held at the Greenfield Area Christian Center Community Room, 910 N. Fifth St., Greenfield, beginning at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17. Lynchburg tractor pulls
The Lynchburg-Clay FFA, FFA Alumni and SOATPA will host their annual truck and tractor pulls Friday, Aug. 19 and Saturday, Aug. 20 at the Lynchburg Lions Club Park. The gates will open at 5 p.m. and the pulls will start at 7 p.m. on Friday. Saturday at 9 a.m. the SOATPA will hold its antique pulls, which are free to the public. Admission will be $8 per adult and $5 for students. Rod Stewart at senior center
On Saturday, Aug. 20, Patrick Julian, The Rod Stewart Illusion, will perform live at the Highland County Senior Citizens Center. Enjoy your favorite songs by Rod Stewart like “Maggie May,” “Forever Young,” “Have I Told You Lately” and more. Doors open at 6 p.m. with dinner included and the show to follow. The Sinking Spring Church Community Church will hold a spaghetti fundraiser from 4:30 p.m. to ? Saturday, Aug. 24. The meal will include all-you-can-eat pasta, salad, garlic bread and desserts for a freewill donation.
SSCC Board of Trustees
The Southern State Community College Board of Trustees will meet at noon Wednesday, Aug. 24, in the Community Room on the college’s Fayette campus, 1270 U.S. Route 62 SW, Washington C.H. Soup’s On Free Meal
The Soup’s On Free Meal will be held Saturday, Aug. 27 at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, corner of North High and North streets, Hillsboro. Prayer and praise begins at 4:30 p.m. and dinner is served from 5-6 p.m. The menu will be pork BBQ on buns, baked beans, potato salad, assorted drinks and desserts.
The Open Door Free meal at the Greenfield United Methodist Church will be held Saturday, Aug. 27 with serving from 4 until 4:30 p.m. The menu will be hamburgers, chips, baked beans, and angel food cake with fruit.
The Greenfield Church of Christ, 955 Jefferson St., will host a Homecoming Sunday on Sept. 18 starting at 10 a.m. A special worship service and a fellowship meal will follow. The guest speaker will be Denny Dawes. Everyone is welcome.
