HDH Board of Governors meetings
The Highland District Hospital Board of Governors meets in 2014 on the last Wednesday of each month. Meeting schedules for specific committees can be obtained by contacting Melinda Russell at 393-6101.
Greenfield Village Council special meetings
The Greenfield Village Council will hold a special meeting on Dec. 31 at 1 p.m. for the purpose of the consideration of two pieces of legislation. Council will also hold an organizational meeting on Jan. 1 at 11 a.m. This meeting will be followed by a regular meeting.
Gulf Veterans Bonus deadline approaching
The deadline for the Ohio Veterans Bonus for Gulf War Era veterans is quickly approaching. Effective at midnight Dec. 31, 2013 if you served during the Gulf War Era the eligibility to receive your tax free bonus will end. Veterans who served either in the Persian Gulf Theater of operations or anywhere else in the world during the Gulf War between Aug. 2, 1990 through March 31, 1991 are entitled to an Ohio Veterans Bonus. Veterans can go online to https://veteransbonus.ohio.gov/odvs_web/ or come to the Highland County Veterans Service Commission at 1575 N. High St., Suite 400, in the Highland County Tech Center and submit your application online.
Staff members are available to help you negotiate through the process. Ensure to have either your original or a copy of your member 4 DD-214, an honorable discharge and you must have entered into your service from the state of Ohio and provide proof that you continue to reside in Ohio. Blood drive at Walmart
Walmart in Hillsboro has partnered with the Hoxworth Blood Center to host a Community Blood Drive from 10 a.m., to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31. The Hoxworth Donor Bus will be parked on the store lot, located at 540 Harry Saner Rd. All donors will receive a $5 McDonald’s gift card.
To schedule an appointment, call Hoxworth at 1-800-830-1091. Priority will be given to donors who have scheduled an appointment. Walk-in donors are welcome and will be seen as soon as possible.
Applications available for Altrusa scholarships
Altrusa International of Highland County is accepting applications for educational scholarships ranging from $250-$500. Applications may be obtained from any branch of the Highland County District Library, Chatfield College, Shawnee State University, Southern State Community College or Wilmington College.
To be eligible to receive the scholarship applicants must have been a Highland County resident for a minimum of two years, must be at least 25 years of age, currently enrolled or re-entering an accredited institution and have successfully completed a minimum of 12 credit hours in an accredited institution. Deadline for submitting the application is Feb. 1, 2014.
Board of Elections holiday hours
The Highland County Board of Elections will be closed Dec. 24 and 25 in observance of Christmas. the office will be open Dec. 26 and 27. The office will also be closed Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 in observance of New Year’s. It will be open Jan. 2.
VFW fish fry
VFW Post 9094 will be holding a fish fry on Jan. 4 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. The menu will include all the fish you can eat for $8 and fries, slaw, hush puppies and soft drink. Open to the public, the post is located behind the Dairy Queen.
Pancake breakfast at Leesburg Masonic Lodge
The Leesburg Masonic Lodge will have an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast from 8-11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4. The menu will consist of pancakes, sausage, biscuits and gravy, along with coffee, juice, milk and water. The lodge is asking for a charity donation for the meal. Proceeds will be used locally for charitable causes that the lodge is involved in.
L-C Board of Ed. meeting
The Lynchburg-Clay Board of Education will hold its organizational meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6 at the board office building.
Bright Local Board of Ed. meeting
The Bright Local Board of Education will hold its annual tax budget hearing, organizational meting and regular meeting at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15 at Whiteoak High School.

Ohio Farm Bureau cruise
The Ohio Farm Bureau South Region will host its 7th annual member only cruise Nov. 29 to Dec. 4, 2014.
