The Greenfield Police Department continues to investigate a Monday morning shooting incident that chief Tim Hester said he is “fairly confident” was the result of drug-related robbery.

The incident took place at 6:30 a.m. Monday directly across Jefferson Street from McClain High School.

There is a suspect at this point, according to Hester.

While there is a person in custody, Hester said the charges that the detainee faces are not related to the shooting itself and that he has not been identified as the shooter. The male in custody came to the scene after the fact, Hester said, and upon an interview with law enforcement, the officer had probable cause to arrest the individual.

While the incident happened so close to the school, Hester said there was never a threat to any students or employees of the school and by the time students and employees began arriving, the incident was already over.

The victim was transported first to Adena Greenfield Medical Center and then to the Ohio State University Hospital for a serious, but not life-threatening injury.

Bureau of Criminal Investigation evidence technicians responded to the scene and by Monday afternoon, had completed processing the scene and released it back to the property owner, Hester said.

The chief said that as a precautionary measure, school officials were notified of the incident and are being kept informed of the progress of the investigation due to close proximity of the campus to the scene; however, there was never a security threat to the school or the students.

The investigation is expected to take a while to complete, Hester said, and more details will be released at a later time.

“There is a lot of work yet to be done,” Hester said. “We still have a number of people to interview and are working with other agencies” to locate some of them.
