Chicken and noodles

The Fruitdale United Methodist Church will hold a chicken and noodles dinner from 4-7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24. The menu will include homemade noodles, chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes, cole slaw, rolls, a choice of dessert and drinks. A freewill donation will be accepted. Everyone is welcome.

Benefit dinner, dance

The inaugural Glenn Fordyce Community Care Hospice Benefit Dinner and Dance will be held Saturday, Oct. 24 at 10215 Jones Road, Hillsboro. Dinner is at 6 p.m. and dancing starts at 7 p.m. featuring local band Blue Steel. The cost is $25 per person or $40 per couple. Collection for books

The Hillsboro Area Branch of the American Association Women and Altrusa are preparing for their annual book sale. Barrels for the collection of gently used books have been placed in the Leesburg, Greenfield, Lynchburg and Hillsboro libraries, in addition to Kroger, Community Market and the YMCA in Hillsboro. The book sale will be held at the Highland County Administration Building in Hillsboro on Thursday, Nov. 5 from noon to 6 p.m.; Friday, Nov. 6 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 7 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Proceeds provide local scholarships for women returning to school and literacy projects.

Dinner at the First Presbyterian Church of Greenfield

The First Presbyterian Church of Greenfield will serve dinner Sunday, Oct. 25 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The menu will be ham loaf, scalloped potatoes, green beans, a variety of salads, a variety of cakes and pies, rolls, and drinks. The cost of the meal is a suggested donation of $8 per person. Children 12 and under are free. Carry-out will be available.

Halloween canvas art event

On Sunday, Oct. 25 Spark is going to hold its first Halloween canvas art event for children in grades 1-8. at the gallery/studio at 251 Jefferson St., Greenfield, from 2-4 p.m. Wear your favorite Halloween costume and join in the fun while you paint a stretched canvas of a black cat staring at the full moon. The $25 admission fee includes a canvas, acrylic paint, use of parks painting equipment, and professional instruction and assistance. There will be an award for the most creative Halloween costume.

The Southern Ohio Educational Service Center Governing Board will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27 Region 14/Hopewell Center, 5350 W. More Than a Trunk of Treat

The Hillsboro Church of the Nazarene is hosting More Than a Trunk of Treat on Wednesday, Oct. 28 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. You are invited to join in the night of fun and candy. Activities will include trunk or treating, cake walk, pumpkin decorating, storytelling, and refreshments. Local businesses or individuals are encouraged and invited to set up a trunk or donate items. Open Door free meal

The Open Door free meal at the Greenfield United Methodist Church will be held Saturday, Oct. 31. Eat-in serving is at 4 p.m. The menu will be chili, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, crackers and apple sauce.

Fall Festival

The Living Water Faith and Fellowship Fall Festival will be held from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31 at 5846 SR 138, Hillsboro. There will be food, hayrides, games and candy. Call 937-446-1416 if you have any questions.

Senior center Halloween party

The Highland County Senior Citizens Center’s annual Halloween party, indoor trick-or-treat and haunted house is Saturday, Oct. 31st. Indoor trick-or-treating is 6-8 p.m. and haunted house is 6-9 p.m. There will be costume contests for children and adults, games, raffles, free food and more. Admission is $1 per person. Sewing quilts class

Master quilter Jayne Honnold is returning to Spark Creative Artspace this month with an all-day instructional class in sewing quilts at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 31. honnold will stay until the last student has completed their project. The cost of the class is $40 per person and payment will be at the door by cash or personal check. Autumn Fest

The Rainsboro Elementary School Autumn Fest will be held from 5-8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31. There will be games such as ring toss, a cake walk, food and goodies, prince and princess contests, raffles, a live auction, bingo and a haunted office.

Retired Teachers Association meeting

The Highland County Retired Teachers Association will hold its November meeting and luncheon at the Highland County Senior Center, 185 Muntz St., Hillsboro, on Monday, Nov. 2. Social hour begins at 11 a.m.; lunch ($8) is served at noon. All retired teachers are welcome. Reservations may be made by calling 937-393-4951 by Monday, Oct. 26. On the program for November is Tamilla Cole, who will update members on STRS health insurance for 2016. David White, choral director at Hillsboro High School, with some of his students will present a musical program. Donations of paper goods for Samaritan Outreach are requested for the November meeting.

Evening of wine and art

Spark Creative Artspace is teaming up with the McClain High School Varsity Cheerleader Boosters for an adult evening of wine and art. The date is Friday, Nov. 6 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Cost of the event is $40 per person with a good percentage going to help the Tiger cheerleaders purchase uniforms and equipment. All-you-can-eat fish fry

Hillsboro VFW Post 9094 will host an all-you-can-eat fish fry from 4:3o to 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7. The cost is $8 and the menu includes fish, fries, slaw, hush puppies and soft drinks. The event is open to the public.

Harvest Festival

The Buckskin Elementary Harvest Festival will be held Saturday, Nov. 7 from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. The annual event consists of a raffle, an auction, a chicken and noodle dinner, games, crafts, door prizes, and a king/queen, prince/princess, and little prince/little princess pageant. The money raised allows the Buckskin P.T.O. to pay for assemblies, Super Games, academic incentive programs, discipline incentive programs, roller skating parties, special projects, and field trips.

Veterans Day program

The students and staff at Bright Elementary School invite the community to a Veterans Day program at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11. The students will show their patriotism and appreciation to veterans through song, readings, and art. All veterans and members of the community are invited to attend.
