The Public Speaking Sub-district Contest was held at Hillsboro High School on February 18. The Hillsboro FFA Chapter had five speakers who competed on the night.
Michaela Chaney spoke in the Advanced Prepared Public Speaking Contest, Kaitlin Swayne and Meredith Oglesby participated in the Beginning Prepared Contest, and Peyton Kidder and Kaleb Harp spoke in the Creed Contest.
The Advanced Prepared Contest is made up of a speech that is six to eight minutes long, which must be related to a current event in agriculture. The Beginning Prepared contest is made up of a speech that is five to seven minutes long. This speech must also be related to a current event in agriculture. The Creed Contest is open to freshman or first year ag members. The creed must be recited and questions will follow.
Swayne placed 1st and Oglesby placed 2nd in Beginning Prepared. Kidder placed 1st and Harp placed 3rd in the Creed Contest, and Chaney placed 3rd in the Advanced Contest. Swayne and Kidder both moved out of sub-districts and moved on to districts.
The district contest was held on Feb. 26 at Miami Trace High School. The Hillsboro FFA sent Kidder and Swayne to districts for public speaking and also an Ag Sales Team. The Ag Sales team consisted of Kaylee Achor, Lauren Grover, Meredith Oglesby, and Kaitlin Swayne.
In the Ag Sales Contest, each individual must sell their own agricultural product. Then the individual must go through a practicum where the individual must sell another agricultural product that they do not choose. The team must also take an online exam. Swayne placed 2nd in the Beginning Prepared contest at districts. Kidder placed 3rd in the Creed contest and the Ag Sales Team also placed 3rd in the contest.
Swayne will be advancing to the state contest on March 8.
