Hillsboro American Legion team defeated Chillicothe post 757 Wednesday night with a score of 6-3. Ty Crum led the team at the plate with a 3-for-3 effort, including a double and three RBI’s.
“We’re playing much better baseball after starting off the season a little slow,” head coach Scott Morgan said after the game. “Today we played a team that we should beat and we didn’t make the mistakes we have in the past and hit the ball when we needed to. Our pitchers did well and Joe [Wilson] came in and close the door for us. Everything is coming together for us. We got kids finally hitting the ball when they need to. We’re doing the little things we weren’t doing at the beginning of the year.”
Chillicothe started the scoring in the first inning taking the lead with a single run but Hillsboro answered right back with one of their own in the bottom of the inning. Things were quiet the next two innings until Chillicothe took the lead once again in the top of the fourth with another lone runner crossing the plate. This was their last lead of the game as Hillsboro came right back and answered again, this time with three runs in their half to make the score 4-2 in favor of Hillsboro. They added to that lead in the bottom of the fifth and even though Chillicothe was able to muster up one more run in the sixth, Joey Wilson took the mound in the seventh and struck out all three batters he faced to the save and get secure the 6-3 victory for the Legion team.
Hillsboro’s Legion team will be back in action on Friday at noon when they kick off their wooden bat tournament at Shaffer Park. The tournament will run Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
