According to a press release by Highland County Sheriff Richard Warner, a new scam has recently surfaced in the county.

The scammer has made calls to Highland County residents and identified themselves as a special agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration out of Washington, D.C.

According to the press release, the scammer accuses the victim of purchasing pills/drugs from outside of the United States, and the victim is informed they are being indicted and an arrest warrant will be issued if they do not pay money immediately.

Should anyone receive a similar call, do not send money, the sheriff said.

The sheriff advised that no law enforcement agency, including the DEA, collects money from the public to waive a criminal offense.

HCSO is currently investigating the scam. Contact the sheriff’s office at 937-393-1421 for more information. To report incidents to the DEA, call toll-free 877-792-2873.
