Artwork from Up and Beyond Art Studio at the Highco Adult Workshop is currently on display and for sale at Danna’s Diner in uptown Hillsboro.
The Up and Beyond Art Studio is a collaborative art studio consisting of individuals with disabilities who work at Highco, Inc. at Hills and Dales Training Center in Hillsboro. The studio is coordinated by Hills and Dales employee Jordan Freeze.
Freeze said she has, on any given day, between 10 and 26 artists working in the Up and Beyond Studio.
“These artists are all adults who are actually attend Highco Adult Workshop located at Hills and Dales Training Center,” Freeze said. “When they are in the art gallery, they receive 60 percent of what the piece of art sells for. The rest of the money goes back into the studio to buy supplies. The studio also purchases original designs from the artists and pays the artists a $50 design fee. These designs are often replicated in wood and other mediums. ”
Freeze said that several of the artists in the program are extremely talented and draw all the pieces of art freehand. The art pieces, which include wooden items, tapestry wall hangings and paintings are all unique and could include as many as six individual artists who each contribute their talents to one piece of art.
Danna Steventon, owner of Danna’s Diner, said she has always been a big supporter of Hills and Dales and is happy to be able to help the Up and Beyond Art Studio by displaying the artist’s works.
“When Jordan asked me if she could display the art work from the Up and Beyond Studio, I was as excited about it as she was,” Steventon said. “The works of art are beautiful and I’m proud to have them in my restaurant. I would like to invite everyone in to walk around and look at the pieces of art and hopefully they will find a piece of art work they would like to take home with them.”
Freeze said tours of the studio at Hills and Dales can also be arranged to meet the artists face to face.
