OUR VIEW: Support at charity auction for KAMP Dovetail was impressive

More than $10,000 was raised last Saturday for KAMP Dovetail during the 18th annual SATH Charity Auction held at the Highland Fairgrounds in Hillsboro, another tremendous show of support for one of Highland County’s most admirable and worthy causes.

SATH Executive Director Linda Allen said that while a few expenses remained to be paid, the $10,000 goal should be reached.

“I really want to thank the community for their support of the auction,” Allen said. “The people that brought stuff and donated it to the auction stuck around and bought stuff, too. So not only did they donate stuff, but they turned around and bought things. That’s how KAMP Dovetail happens. I have hit this community up so many times, and they never say no. The auctioneers and others donating their time helps, too.”

Allen singled out Twila Smith, who she said starts in December working on the auction by sending out letters requesting donations from local businesses, makes follow up calls, then goes back and picks items up. Allen said Smith collected more than 60 gift certificates and most all of the new items the auction had to offer. She also gave a shout-out to the auction crew of Glenn Hess, Brad Hess, Kim Hess and John Grover and local businessman Mike Morgan for donating their time at the auction.

KAMP Dovetail is one of the most amazing and impressive events of every year in Highland County. The entirely volunteer-run summer camp is for children with disabilities in Highland and surrounding counties of Ohio. The camp is held at the Rocky Fork Lake State Park, and each camper is teamed with a personal camp volunteer. The 2017 theme will be “KAMP Dovetail-Jurassic Camp.” The week of KAMP Dovetail starts Monday, June 19. More than 300 special needs children attend each year.

Next up for SATH as a benefit for KAMP Dovetail is the second annual bowling tournament that will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 26 at Highland Lanes in Hillsboro. The cost for the tournament is $35 per person or $150 per team. For more information call 937-725-2010, 937-763-0081 or email [email protected].

Congratulations and thank you to Linda Allen, all the volunteers who donated their time and services, those who donated auction items, and everyone who showed up to make last Saturday’s charity auction a rousing success.
