Green Devils jinx Lady Lions

Things were looking good for the Fairfield Lady Lions at home Monday night — they were ahead by 8 points at halftime, had put up a 10-point lead straight out of the locker room and seemed headed for the win — but the North Adams Lady Green Devils had different plans. The visitors brought on a tough inside game that took them to a 15-point win at 52-37 when the clock ran out.

The Lady Lions kept their guests at nominal gains in the first period, finishing things off with a 10-point lead at 17-7 for the quarter. Carly Arnold scored 6 of the Lady Lions’ 17 points in the first quarter by putting up two long 3-point shots, and Blake Adams, Brianna Barnes and Grace Shope added several 2-pointers.

North Adams came out of the gate hot with two 2-pointers at the start of the second quarter, outscoring Fairfield by 2 points at 12-10 for the quarter. Shope stacked up three 2-pointers, and Barnes and Chloe Barber each put in a layup.

By the half, North Adams had narrowed the lead, but the scoreboard still favored Fairfield at 27-19.

The third quarter saw what seemed like a different visiting team come out of the locker room with a 14-point gain for the quarter, outscoring the Lady Lions by 10 points and taking a 2-point lead. The North Adams ladies kept Fairfield’s gains at two 2-pointers from Arnold and Adams.

The Lady Green Devils secured the win in the fourth quarter, maintaining their lead for the rest of the quarter and posting 19 points. Arnold, Adams and Barnes did their part by posting a combined 6 points for the Lady Lions, but it didn’t add up.

When the clock ran out, the guests had the win at 52-37.

Shope led scoring for the Lions with 10 points.

“We put two good quarters together, one mediocre quarter and one terrible quarter,” said Fairfield girls coach Chad Hamilton. “Against a good team like that, if you can’t put four together, it’s going to be a long night. They certainly have a size advantage, and once they started moving the ball really well, getting us out of position and getting the ball inside, we had a tough time stopping them.”

The Lady Lions now hold a 3-7, 2-3 record.
