Hillsboro’s Carter going ‘down under’ for wrestling tourney

A local wrestler will be going “down under” this summer to participate in an Australian wrestling tournament.

According to a press release, Dawson Carter, a junior at Hillsboro High School, will depart July 9 to represent Ohio as a member of the 2017 Ohio East Conference Wrestling Team. Carter will compete for individual honors and a team championship title in a nine-day tournament event in Queensland.

Carter started wrestling in middle school after his brother, Brandon, began wrestling for Hillsboro – and wrestling alongside his brother was what kept him coming back.

“We just go hooked on it,” he said.

Before beginning his high school wrestling career, Carter said, he placed in several state tournaments, including the Tournament of Champions, where he won eighth place as an eighth-grade wrestler.

Carter said he didn’t do as well as he had hoped this season, finishing 2-2 in the district tournament, but he hopes to perform well in Australia.

“I’m not real sure how I’ll do,” he said. “I think I’ll be pretty good. Ohio has some of the tougher wrestling competitions, but I don’t know. I’m hoping I’ll do good.”

Carter said he’s been reaching out to local businesses to sponsor his trip, which will cost about $4,000.

Carter said he would like to thank Richard Burns, his middle school wrestling coach, for his efforts in jumpstarting his wrestling career.

“He helped me out a lot,” he said.
