The Wildcats boys golf team will again represent the Southern Hills Athletic Conference (SHAC) this season. The Wildcats are looking to bounce back from a rough 2016 season that left the Wildcats in fifth place in the conference.
Whiteoak returns eight golfers from last season’s squad and one new addition. The school is represented by two seniors, three juniors, and four sophomores.
The team also welcomes a new coach for the 2017 season as Wayne Ferguson takes over the program after the departure of Steve Large.
Ferguson told The Times-Gazette, “The experience that we have returning will help us a lot. They played pretty well last year so hopefully we do well.”
“I enjoy having young players on the team, it gives me the opportunity to work with them and give them guidance as far as the game of golf is concerned.”, said Ferguson.
Ferguson feels that the season will be a learning experience for himself and the boys on the team. He said, “I’m going to try and help them as much as I can. I’m not a pro golfer by any means and I don’t have experience teaching golf at all. This is a new experience for me and it will be a learning experience for everyone involved.”
“I think this is going to be a lot of fun. I have a good group of kids and I am excited to work with them.”, said Ferguson when asked about his level of excitement for the upcoming season.
The Wildcats’ home course is Whiteoak Golf Course located at 5510 Tri County Highway in Sardinia.
Whiteoak opened their season at home on August 10 against the team from Williamsburg High School. The regular season will last just over a month with the final regular season match scheduled for September 13 at home against the Manchester Greyhounds.
