Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mutangs beat Alexander Lady Spartans 4-1 to advance to regional tournament

Lynchburg-Clay High School’s Lady Mustangs soccer team traveled to Waverly High School on Saturday to take on the Alexander Lady Spartans in the Southeast district final soccer match.

The Lady Mustangs emerged from the tilt with a 4-1 victory and a spot in the regional tournament.

Alexander was over matched in this contest as they only attempted one shot, a goal, compared to 11 shots on goal and four goals for Lynchburg-Clay.

Senior Angela McLaughlin recorded two goals in the match, each of them coming in the opening minutes of both halves.

Junior Peyton Bell and sophomore Kaylee Lunsford were responsible for the other two goals for the Lady Mustangs.

Senior Taiyler Marcelino and junior Savannah Cochran both tallied an assist in the first half of the match.

The Lady Spartans keeper made seven saves on the day to keep the final margin to only three goals.

The Lady Mustangs recorded two corner kicks in each half, while the Alexander girls had only one during the course of the game.

Riley Creditt received a yellow card for pushing an Alexander player during a battle for the ball in the first half.

The four Lady Mustang goals were recorded at 39:33 and 36:17 of the first half and 37:49 and 23:02 of the second half.

The Lady Spartans’ lone goal was recorded at 26:32 of the second half.

The Lady Mustangs were each presented with first place medals to commemorate their district championship, Lynchburg-Clay also received a district championship trophy.

Alexander was presented with individual medals as well as a trophy for district runner up.

The Lady Mustangs will travel to Waverly again on Tuesday to take on the Wheelersburg Lady Pirates in the D III region 11 regional semi-final match.

The winner of Tuesday’s match between the Lady Mustangs and the Lady Pirates will advance to Saturdays’ regional final to take on the winner of the match between Grandview Heights and Zanesville Bishop Rosecrans.
