The Hillsboro Indians varsity basketball team defeated cross-county rival the McClain Tigers on Saturday in the finale of the Ohio Valley Hoops Classic (OVHC) by a score of 58-36.

Phil Mycroft led the Indians with 16 points and was awarded the Most Outstanding Player in the game. Dalton Mischal led the Tigers with 24 points including four three pointers.

Hillsboro struggled to find a groove offensively in the first quarter as they only tallied nine points and trailed the Tigers 10-9 heading into the second quarter.

Hillsboro head coach Bruce Miles demanded that his team “work harder” on the court at the quarter break.

The Indians heeded their coaches message and entered the second quarter with renewed energy and effort on both sides of the floor as the quickly scored eight straight points, six of which were scored on back to back three point shots by Hayden Haines and Mason Swayne respectively. Josh Keets capped off the run when he got an offensive rebound and layup to give Hillsboro a 17-10 advantage and force the Tigers to call timeout.

Hillsboro went on to outscore McClain 17-8 in the second quarter to take an eight point lead at 26-18 heading into halftime.

The Indians pushed the lead to double figures early in the third quarter following a Keets layup.

However, McClain refused to back down against the Indians and were able to get within six points at 37-31 as the third quarter expired.

Mischal exploded for the Tigers in the third quarter as he recorded 11 of McClain’s 13 points in the third quarter to keep his team in contention.

McClain head coach Jesse Mitchell elaborated on the third quarter after the game. “The plan at halftime was to get it reversed to the wing and then attack. We did that one time and got called for an offensive foul and it never happened again. Then Dalton Mischal thought he had to take over because everyone else was just watching him,” said Mitchell.

Hillsboro put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter as the Indians had an answer to anything the Tigers tried on both ends of the court. Hillsboro outscored McClain 21-5 in the fourth quarter to pull away for the large victory.

Miles said after the game, “That fourth quarter was huge for us. We came out on a huge run and got a lot of stops. The freshmen did a great job on Mischal in the fourth quarter. We put a little more athleticism on him and I think that made a huge difference.”

The Indians will return to action on Saturday when they host Logan Elm. The Tigers will be back on the court Friday when they travel to Jackson to take on the Ironmen in Frontier Athletic Conference action.
