Talented group back for Mustangs in 2015

The Mustangs of Lynchburg-Clay cross country are returning quite a bit of talent for the 2015 season along with third year head coach James O’Conner.

For the boys team, there are only two seniors – Christian Inman and Noah Scott – both of whom will help out the team of 13 total boys on the journey for a league title. Also helping with that will be juniors Brandon McCammon and Bobby Merry, who were both solid runners in 2014.

For the girls, they have five young, talented girls and will be running without a senior on the squad. The girls will be led by junior Lexi Waits and sophomores Emily Pinkerton and All-Southern Hills Athletic Conference athlete Angela McLaughlin.

Coach O’Conner thinks both teams could improve on last year because a majority of their talent is back.

“Our league is always strong in cross country,” O’Conner said about the SHAC. “The boys finished sixth in the SHAC last year with the girls finishing fifth. I believe both teams could move up a spot or two at the league meet this year. We didn’t really loose much talent from last season and the kids who are coming back, their times have improved across the board for both the boys and the girls.”

Coach O’Conner would like his team to improve this year not only at the league level, but also at districts.

“I would like to see improvement on the league level and at the district level from both the boys and the girls team,” O’Conner said. “As a team, I think both of them can and will improve at both of those spots this year.”

Both teams will have their first meet of the season on their home course at Lynchburg-Clay High School. It will be at 4:30 on Thursday, Aug. 27.
