Lady Lions fall in extra set

The Fairfield Lady Lions put up a valiant fight on Monday night, forcing five sets against Southern Hills Athletic Conference opponent Fayetteville, but were unable to win the deciding set and lost the night with a final of 3-2.

Things were looking down for the Lady Lions right from the start, as they dropped the first set with a score of 18-25.

In the second set, they turned things around and got the momentum back on their side with some great teamwork and timely scores to even the score 1-1 with a 25-21 victory.

The Fairfield girls carried that performance over into the third set and won it 25-23, but the next set was won by the Lady Rockets 25-18.

This forced a fifth set which saw the two team match point for point all the way until the final scores. Fayetteville came out on top in that set with a final of 16-14.

“Overall, these girls played their hearts out,” said Lady Lions coach Jeanette Cunningham after the close loss. “Tonight was probably the best game that I have seen the girls play. On top of that, it was the first time that we’ve lost the first set and then came back and won the second set. Usually, if we lose the first set, we’re done for the rest of the game.

“The girls played really good tonight, it just wasn’t enough. We’re getting there though. Baby steps.”
