The Lychburg-Clay Mustangs (17-5) are moving on to the district finals after defeating Westfall 7-6 on Saturday afternoon thanks in huge part to a great play to end the game involving first baseman Morgan Ryan and catcher Kendall Vilvens.

With bases loaded in the final inning and bases loaded, a wide throw to first allowed one run to score and the coach for Westfall sent another to tie the game. Ryan, the first baseman, got to the ball quickly and threw a missile to the waiting Vilvens at the plate for the final out and to end the game with the Mustangs on top 7-6.

“Today is a great day to be a Lynchburg-Clay Mustang,” said Mustangs’ Head Coach Garyn Waits after the game. “Today’s game was exciting and we had a very resilient performance from the guys today. We battled through so errors and had some clutch hits. And we ended the game on a bang-bang play at the plate after a great throw from Morgan.”

The Mustangs will now play in the District finals on against no. 1 seeded Wheelersburg, who has been in the Final Four each of the last six years, on Wednesday, May 18 at the Chillicothe Paints Stadium with the game starting at 5 p.m.
