Sheriff Donnie Barrera reports for the week of August 10-6 the Highland County Sheriff’s Office received 362 911 calls, answered 171 requests for service, dispatched 131 fire and EMS runs, took 29 offense reports, and investigated five traffic crashes.

At 9:36 p.m. on Aug. 11, a Webertown Road resident returned home to find his home had been burglarized. A deputy was dispatched to the scene to investigate. Several items were reported stolen and additional items were removed from the residence, but not taken. Highland County deputies assisted the Greenfield Police Department late Wednesday, Aug. 12 by apprehending a male who pulled a firearm on several citizens outside a Greenfield area business. The suspect reportedly fled the scene in a white pickup truck driving westbound on SR 28. Sheriff’s deputies, GPD officers, and a Leesburg police patrolman all responded to the area to attempt to locate the suspect. The vehicle was first spotted by the LPD on SR 28 near ringer Lane and was soon stopped by a deputy in the village of Leesburg. The male was taken into custody without incident. A loaded firearm was recovered from the vehicle. The suspect was transported to Highland District Hospital for mental evaluation. Charges have been filed by bother the sheriff’s office and Greenfield Police Department.

A 911 call was received at 9:20 p.m. on Aug. 15 from a resident on SR 134 in Salem Township. The caller’s mother and stepfather were involved in a physical altercation and law enforcement was necessary. Deputies responded to the scene and arrested James J. Begley, of Lynchburg, for one count of domestic violence.

Deputies were dispatched to Highland Trails East at Rocky Fork Lake at 11:16 p.m. on Aug. 15 when several 911 calls reported an unknown male with a gun had chased their children and threatened to kill them. The suspect immediately fled the scene in a dark-colored, newer model “box shaped” vehicle, last seen turning west on to North Shore Drive. Deputies spoke to several of the persons involved and patrolled the area extensively, but could not locate the suspect.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Gage Sherman, age 24 Hillsboro for OVI and placing injurious material on the roadway.

Tammy S. Kidder, 50, of Hillsboro, for violation of a protection order.

Samantha Midlam, 23, of Wilmington, for OVI and assured clear distance.

Sandra Crane, of Hillsboro, for failure to obey a traffic control device.

Alisha Quinoez, of Washington C.H., for failure to obey a traffic control device.

Herbert Reffitt, of Hillsboro, for failure to obey a traffic control device.

Nicholas Brown, of Hillsboro, for criminal trespass.

Craig Smith, of Sabina, for failure to appear.

ACCIDENTS

On Aug. 15 at 10:09 a.m., the police department responded to a motor vehicle crash. Thomas Meredith, 28 of Vanceburg, Ky., was northbound on South High Street and was looking at SR 73 West. The lanes were marked ahead for a left turn or to go straight. Meredith started to pull into the left lane. Joseph Hames, 48, of Hillsboro, was behind Meredith and wanted to turn left also. Hames thought Meredith was going straight. Hames started to pass Meredith on the left as Meredith was pulling into the left lane. Meredith was in control of the lane. The vehicle struck causing damage to both.

On August 16 at 4:12 p.m., the police department responded to a motor vehicle crash. Ronald McGraw, 26, of Hillsboro, was eastbound on West Main Street when he came to Taylor Court and began to stop for traffic coming westbound so he could turn left into Taylor Court. A juvenile, age 16, of Hillsboro, was eastbound on West Main Street when she looked down to turn on her air-conditioner. The juvenile stated she looked up and saw the truck in front of her turning, but she then hit the vehicle driven by McGraw. The juvenile was cited for assured clear distance.

INCIDENT

On Monday, Aug. 17 at 5:51 a.m., the police department received a call from a resident in the 100 block of West North Street who reported that sometime overnight an unknown person or persons busted the rear window out on his vehicle. The vehicle was parked in his driveway.

Alicia Wilson, 28, of Hillsboro, for driving under suspension.

David Simmons, 50, of Hillsboro, for driving under suspension.

James Barber, 43, of Greenfield, for driving under suspension and failure to appear.

Leslie Beatty, 43, of Bainbridge, for telephone harassment.

ACCIDENT

On Monday, Aug. 17 at 12:39 p.m. the police department received a report of a two-car crash in the 300 block of North High Street. Upon officers arrival it was found that a vehicle driven by Payton Smith, 16, of Greenfield, was stopped southbound on North High Street due to a red light. Todd Wilkin, 53 of Hillsboro, was backing from a parking space in front of the post office and failed to see Smith. Wilkin struck Smith’s vehilce causing damage to both vehicles. Wilkin was cited for improper backing.

INCIDENTS

On Thursday, Aug. 20 at 12:31 p.m. Rite Aid contacted the police department advising they wanted to file charges on an employee for theft. It was found that after customers paid for items and left the store the employee would void the transaction out of the register and pocket the money. Amy Toner, 35, of Hillsboro, was arrested for theft.

On Thursday, Aug. 20 at 5:13 s.m. the police department received a call of damage to a vehicle. Upon officers arrival it was learned that the vehicle was parked at Montrose Apartments. Sometime in the early morning hours of Aug. 20 someone threw a large crescent wrench through the rear window of the victim’s car.
