Judy Durbin will be the guest of honor at this year’s Human Rights Celebration on Dec. 10.

A native of Colorado, Judy met her future husband, Charles, on college break while working in a coffee shop. Living in Colorado Springs, Judy managed a high school cafeteria for 15 years.

This experience was to serve her well when after raising three children, Judy and Charles moved to Hillsboro in 2011.

They joined Hillsboro First United Methodist Church and became involved with “Our Daily Bread.”

Started by Dick and Anna Spilker, “Our Daily Bread” is a free lunch program on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The meals are nutritious and served on plates, not disposable paper. Area churches provide each meal. Guests can have a second helping but no more, and carry-outs are not available.

Judy schedules the meals, which serve about 1,100 people each month. A free-will offering is taken and Judy notes the program could not continue if First UMC did not allow them to use the facility.

They are able to make use of community service workers as well. There is also a carry-out Saturday lunch offered twice a month. Some delivery is available, but people are encouraged to come in person.

The Durbins are also involved in a Bible study and Judy serves on the leadership council and is in charge of missions for the church, which include Operation Christmas Child, Compassion International, and Wee Child Preschool. Judy also finds time to volunteer at Samaritan Outreach Services.

The Human Rights Celebration will be held on Dec. 10 at Hillsboro First United Methodist. The evening will begin with a carry-in dinner at 5:30 p.m. followed by a program honoring Mrs. Durbin. Everyone is invited to participate.
