Hillsboro loses battle with CHS

The scoreboard was a poor indicator of how well the Hillsboro Lady Indians played on Wednesday night against South Central Ohio League opponent Chillicothe, as the final tally came to 48-37 in favor of the Lady Cavaliers.

The Hillsboro girls found themselves down early to Chillicothe and at the end of the first quarter the score was 16-7, thanks in part to several turnovers on their own side of the court. In the second quarter, the Lady Indians cleaned up their play a bit and clamped down on the defense, allowing just four points, trimming the lead to just three points going into halftime at 20-17.

In the third quarter, the Hillsboro squad picked up where they left off in the second quarter, forcing Chillicothe to make mistake in their offense and capitalizing on the mistakes and at one point, held a 26-24 lead. But Chillicothe ended the third with five points to jump back ahead and were up 29-26 at the buzzer.

Hillsboro scored four four points to start the final frame to jump back ahead but Chillicothe went on a 7-0 run to create some distance between them and the Lady Indians which meant Hillsboro would have to foul to keep time on the clock. Unfortunately, the gap was too wide and there wasn’t enough time and Chillicothe was successful on their free throws going ahead by 11 points before the final buzzer sounded with a final score of 48-37.

“Chillicothe is pretty athletic and really get out and pressure you,” said coach JR Moberly after the game. I think our girls responded really well to that and attacked back. I was really proud of the effort these girls played with tonight. The game got a little out of hand at the end and forced us to start fouling so this game really wasn’t an 11 point game.
