A man who was working under the hood of a van Friday afternoon in New Market when it was struck in the front end by a pickup truck suffered several injuries including broken bones, but his injuries do not now appear to be life-threatening, according to Highland County emergency personnel.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Wilmington Post said the man working under the van’s hood was considered a pedestrian on the accident report. He was identified as Stephen Ernst, 69, of Georgetown.

Ernst was flown from the scene in a helicopter. The state patrol said he was originally listed in critical condition, but that he has since been stabilized.

The accident happened when a southbound pickup truck crested a hill at the intersection of U.S. Route 62 and New Market Road, drove off the right side of the road into the New Market Food Mart parking lot, and struck the van Ernst was working on, Highland County Sheriff Donnie Barrera said at the scene last Friday.

The accident was first reported to the Highland County Sheriff’s Office at 3:43 p.m. Friday, the state patrol said.

The state patrol said Tuesday that complete name of the person driving the truck was not available, but he was from New Vienna. He was originally cited for failure to control, but the state patrol said Tuesday that it appeared that charge had been retracted.

No other information has been available from the state patrol.
