Rainsboro Elementary students presented their own academic improvements, and a song, to members of the Greenfield Exempted Village School District Board of Education on Monday.
The students, according to the school’s principal Quincey Gray, each shared with board members their test scores and portfolios, highlighting a subject area or a skill on which they have each improved this school year.
Another group of students, all fifth-graders under the direction of music teacher Victoria Mikkelsen, played a song on their recorder instruments for the board. The students are involved in what is called Recorder Karate, a program Mikkelsen said allows the student to earn colored belts, like in karate, for songs they play.
She said the program challenges students who find music easy by letting them move faster and allowing students who may have difficulty in music to still find success, but at a slower pace.
In other business, superintendent Joe Wills updated the board on the district’s safety software, which is not yet fully implemented, but is in the process. Pictures all around the district have been taken for the purpose of use with the software, which will allow first responders to access a visual of layout of whatever part of a building where an emergency situation may occur.
He said the software will also help keep the district’s safety plans updated with the state.
On other matters, the board accepted on the consent agenda a donation from the Greenfield Rotary Club for $7,500. Wills said money from the Rotary Club goes to assist students in need. Also accepted was a bequest in the amount of $1,151 from the estate of Donald Robbins. The resignation of bus driver Marilyn Beatty was also accepted by the board.
Employment recommendations approved by the board were as follows: Tyler Carman, assistant baseball coach; Drew Hamilton, track assistant; Lori Jones, girls track; David Weaks, assistant track; Jacob Orr-Zody, assistant track; Ed Bolender, softball head coach; Roger Boles, baseball assistant; Richard Bunner, head coach baseball; and Ian Trefz, assistant softball.
The next meeting of the Greenfield Exempted Village School District Board of Education is scheduled for March 21 at 7 p.m. in the boardroom of the central office in Greenfield. The meetings are open to the public.
