The Fairfield Lions baseball team was coming off a big win over Southern Hills athletic Conference opponent Peebles on Tuesday night where Hunter Dixon and Matthew Spears combined to throw a no-hitter and the Lions won 8-0. On Wednesday night, they hosted Paint Valley and fell to the final score of 4-2.
The Bearcats jumped out on top early, hitting a two-run homerun in the very first inning to take a 2-0 lead. It took Fairfield an inning, but they finally answered in the bottom of the third scoring two runs and tying the score at two runs a piece.
Neither team scored in the fourth inning but Paint Valley was able to get across two more in the fifth inning to bring home the win with a score of 4-2. Fairfield was unable to get anything going in the last three innings.
“Being another young team this season, we battled well tonight,” said Lions Head Coach Tony Haley after the game. “[Paint Valley] jumped out early with the two-run homer there in the first inning and I thought that might hurt us but our guys kept fighting and we came back in the third and tied it up.
“We had a miss played fly ball in the fifth that kind of hurt us. But I have to give a hats off to [Paint Valley’s] pitcher. He pitched a really good game holding us to only four hits in the game.
“I think we’re coming around. We played pretty good defense so hopefully we’ll be ready to go when the league starts. I just like the overall effort of our team. The guys are coming together as a team and hopefully we can keep that going.”
