The Washington Blue Lions hosted the Hillsboro Indians for an SCOL baseball game Wednesday.

The rains held off long enough for the game to be played, with the Blue Lions emerging on top, 5-1.

Cole Massie pitched a complete game, three-hitter for the win. He allowed one unearned run, did not walk a batter and struck out seven.

J. Helterbrand suffered the loss for the Indians.

He pitched six innings with nine hits and five runs (four earned). He issued no walks and struck out three.

“We finally played good baseball today,” Washington head coach Tyler Rhodus said. “We had one error in the top of first that led to Hillsboro’s only run.

“After that we played really good defense,” Rhodus said. “Our other charged error could have gone either way and may have been called a hit by many coaches.

“We are doing much better hitting 1-9 now opposed to early,” Rhodus said. “We had several guys come through with timely hitting.”

Nick Barrett had a hit to score a run, and Aaron Greer had a double that scored a run that gave the Blue Lions a 2-1 lead after two innings.

In the third inning, Caden Cluxton led off with a single, advanced to second on a stolen base and scored on a fielder’s choice from Massie.

Brian Wilson had a single to score Massie, and Greer had a single that scored Wilson.

“Cole Massie pitched a gem of a game,” Rhodus said. “I was very pleased with our team effort today. We were focused and determined today. It was a good step in the right direction.”

The Blue Lions improve to 5-1 overall, 3-1 in the SCOL.

The Blue Lions are off Thursday and are slated to host Wilmington Friday at 5 p.m.
