Bomb threat evacuates Hillsboro H.S./M.S. again

For the fifth time since March 18, activities at Hillsboro Hillsboro High School were interrupted Friday after a bomb threat was found in the school.

Superintendent Jim Smith said a threat that read “1:45 boom” was found in a high school bathroom around 1:30 p.m.

Smith said students and staff were evacuated from the high school and middle school well before 1:45 p.m. and the Hillsboro Police Department was summoned to the scene. Smith said that after the school was searched, police personnel and school administrators decided to bring the students and staff back into the school around 2 p.m., since 1:45 p.m. was well past.

He said students were dismissed from school on their regular schedule.

“We, too, are frustrated by the situations that have occurred over the past few weeks in the MS/HS,” Smith said later in a prepared statement that he said would also go out to parents. “With the previous threats we have taken seriously the investigations and have identified two of the students. In the future, we have a plan to limit restroom usage and monitor when students leave classrooms to prevent future issues.

“The Hillsboro City Schools are working closely with the Hillsboro Police Department on setting up safeguards to prevent future situations and restore your confidence in the safety of your children at school.

“At Hillsboro we have a dedicated staff who are doing all they can to create a safe environment for your students and an administrative team that will continue to set policies that will prevent future issues. We will continue to provide important information to the public as needed.

“We are doing all that we can to find a solution that will bring an end to these situations and we ask that you talk with your students about the seriousness of what is taking place.”
