Adopt-A-Pet Saturday

Five puppies will be available to the public when a Highland County Dog Pound Adopt-A-Pet event is held Saturday at Walgreens in Hillsboro.

The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the store parking lot and the 12-week-old puppies are a Shepherd mix. There are three male and two female puppies.

There will also be hot dogs and drinks, raffles and a bake sale. Most of the proceeds go to the Highland County Dog Pound Volunteer Program and are used for things like vaccines, worming and taking injured dogs to the veterinarian, according to Highland County Dog Warden Cathy Seifer. She said the dog pound does one or two adoption events each year at Walgreens.

“They’ve asked us the last four or five years and they’ve been really good to work with,” Seifer said. “I don’t think we’ve ever come back with a puppy.”

The puppies will be vaccinated, wormed and ready to take home with a $57 adoption fee. Anyone paying the fee receives a $75 voucher to have the dog spayed or neutered.

Walgreens will be grilling and giving away hot dogs and drinks. There is no charge for the food or drinks, but donations will be accepted. The money goes to the Highland County Dog Pound Volunteer Program or Red Nose Day, a national fundraiser that Walgreens store manager Kendra Spice said helps lift children out of poverty.

There will be two raffles with one benefitting each of the organizations. Spice said the raffles items are usually baskets full of dog care items.

The Dog Pound Volunteers will hold the bake sale.

“We do it for the fact that we want to help the local community,” Spice said. “We are a nationwide chain, but we have developed a really good relationship with the Dog Pound and we like to give back to the community as much as we can.”
