Drug arrests on the rise in Greenfield

The number of drug arrests in Greenfield is rising, according to a report on Wednesday by city manager Ron Coffey at a village council meeting.

Coffey reported that the Greenfield Police Department has recorded 23 drug arrests since April 1, and those include 13 felony offenses.

The Times-Gazette in the last two weeks has reported on arrests stemming from four incidents that have resulted in high-level felony offenses relating to methamphetamine production.

On Thursday, Sgt. Jeremiah Oyer, who is currently the officer in charge at the GPD, said that while he did not have exact numbers available from previous months, April’s drugs arrests are up, and the amount of felony arrests in that period of time he knew to be higher than normal.

Oyer noted that when the warmer weather settles in, the police department tends to see “a spike in everything,” but it is the continued “hard work and dedication” of the officers that keeps the department on top of the criminal activity.

In other business, council members voted to reject bids previously received for residential trash service.

Two proposals for residential, communitywide trash service have been discussed in previous council meetings. In January, the matter was put into the health, safety, and welfare committee for study and review. Those proposals came after council in November passed legislation authorizing Coffey to solicit for them.

In those discussions the one thing that has been clear has been the confusion on what the services would actually entail.

Coffey said Thursday that the scope was too “broad” in what was submitted when the proposals were requested. Council rejecting the bids allows the village to revisit the matter later, and to be more specific when requesting future proposals.

Coffey reported that a recently released JobsOhio annual report for 2015 contains an article with favorable mention about Greenfield in relation to the collaborative effort to bring Corvac Composites to the village. Coffey said a direct link to the report is available on the village’s website, which is listed below.

As previously reported, Greenfield’s spring Cleanup Day is scheduled for May 7 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. As with previous years, a dumpster will be set up near the railroad tracks between South Washington and South Second streets. The service is free to residents, but there will be a fee for certain items like tires. For more details, go to www.greenfieldohio.net.

The Greenfield Village Council meets the first and third Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the council chambers located on the first floor of the City Building. To be added to a meeting’s agenda, call the village offices at 937-981-3500. The meetings are open to the public.
