2-hour parking limit is in force again

A two-hour parking limit is being enforced again in the uptown Hillsboro area.

The Hillsboro Police Department said Friday that the two-hour limit started being enforced on May 11, the same day the police department posted a notice on its Facebook saying that the two-hour limit was being re-enforced.

The two-hour limit is being enforced from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, on the following streets: 100 block of East Main Street, 100 block of West Main Street, 100 block of North High Street, 100 block of South High Street, 100 Block of East Walnut Street, 100 block of West Walnut Street up to the first alley, 100 block of East Beech Street, 100 block of West Beech Street up to the first alley, Governor Foraker Place and Governor Trimble Place.

Actually, HPD Sgt. Aaron Reynolds said, the reserve officer handling the enforcement only patrols in the uptown area twice a week. But it’s on random days and at random hours.

“He doesn’t enforce it every day, but if there’s an issue like an illegally parked vehicle or someone parked in fire lanes or handicapped spaces, we’ll go enforce it,” Reynolds said.

The officer marks vehicle tires with chalk, then goes back two hours later to see if the vehicles have been moved. If they have not, he leaves a ticket on the vehicle.

The fine for exceeding the limit is $10 and offenders have 30 days to pay the fine.

Reynolds said he was not sure what happens if a ticket is not paid within that time frame.

Hillsboro Police Chief Todd Whited and Hillsboro Safety and Service Director Todd Wilkin were both unavailable Friday and could not be reached for comment.

Several business owners have routinely complained that their customers complain to them that they can’t find parking spaces in the uptown area, and that too many employees who work uptown park on the street rather than in specifically designated areas.

On the other hand, several hairdressers have said that it often takes more than two hours to complete some of the services their customers want.

Reynolds said the fines can be paid at the Hillsboro Police Department, located at 128 W. Walnut St., 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
