Greenfield man charged with arson

A Greenfield man is facing arson and other charges after allegedly starting a fire in the home where he lives.

Roderick Croy Jr., 30, was still incarcerated Thursday at the Highland County Justice Center after being charged with aggravated arson, aggravated menacing and disorderly conduct by intoxication following a Monday incident.

The Greenfield Police Department said officers received a call from a female resident at a home in the 100 block of Cameron Drive around 8:30 a.m. Monday reporting that there had been a small fire in the home that had been extinguished.

Upon arrival at the scene, an officer said Croy was obviously under the influence “of at least” alcohol and was attempting to light a fire outside and away from the home. The spokesperson said that inside the home Croy had apparently started a fire in a laundry basket that had clothes in it. The fire inside was put out, but not before it did some minor carpet damage in the home.

A police department spokesperson said the arson charge was in relation to the fire inside the home and that the menacing charge was filed because Croy made people inside the home believe he was going to harm someone or their property.

Croy, who has a record with both Highland County Common Pleas Court and Hillsboro Municipal Court, was being held on a $26,000 bond Thursday, according to the Justice Center’s website.

In 2011, Croy was indicted in a multiple count indictment with engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity. He eventually pled guilty to trafficking in drugs in the vicinity of a juvenile and was sentenced to four years in prison, according to online court records.
